Loading... Please wait...In the "Space Age", why are glass lenses still around? The simple answer is clarity and scratch-resistance. You don't need scratch-resistant coatings on glass lenses, after all, the only reason scratch-resistant coatings exhist is because they are trying to make plastic as scratch-resistant as glass. The clarity of glass is much better than plastic, you have an increase in accuity with glass. Some plastic lenses cause you to keep cleaning your glass constantly, you can "clean" them enough to be as clear as glass. Prescription lenses become heavier as the prescription increases in thickess, this is why we make glass lenses in sphere powers of plano to +3.50 or plano to -3.50. Glass has gotten more expensive in the last few years, it is only about 5% of the total optical market. There is no getting around the fact that plastic lenses are lighter than glass, but with all the Titanium frames available it has made them light enough to be comfortable.
Note: Glass lenses are getting harder to get, and the labs are taking longer to make the lenses. So it will take about 3 weeks plus to process glass prescription lenses.
